Please note that there have been several text messaging scams lately targeting Co-op Services Credit Union as well as many other financial institutions. Please be aware of these scams and don't become a victim of fraud.

Beware of:
  • Phishing – You receive a call or email that seems to be from a credible source requesting that you verify account information or your account will be affected. They direct you to a website or phone number that appears legitimate, where you're asked to provide your Social Security Number, account number, passwords, or other sensitive information.
  • Foreign Letters – A person from another country offers to give you a large sum of cash in exchange for allowing him to put money in your account to hide it from the government. There is no money and your account number is stolen.
  • Advance Fee Loans – You're told you can get a loan regardless of credit history, if you pay several hundred dollars in advance.
  • Foreclosure Rescue – Those in danger of foreclosure are easily taken in by promises to save their homes. In reality, these schemes will swindle the victim out of mortgage payments or the deed to their house in exchange for "negotiating with lenders."
  • Hidden Bankruptcy – Though bankruptcy itself is legitimate, it comes with serious consequences to your credit. Some companies hide the fact that they're offering bankruptcy with claims to "consolidate your bills without borrowing."
  • Fake Debt Collectors – Government warnings have been issued regarding fake debt collectors repeatedly calling people at home and work and threatening arrest if a debt does not get paid. This fear-based tactic convinces victims to pay on debts they don't even owe.
  • Credit Repair – According to officials at the Federal Trade Commission, which has taken action against numerous companies that claim they can repair your credit, they have yet to find one that actually fixes a damaged credit report.
  • Home-based Businesses – These schemes involving tempting offers of big earnings while working from home are becoming increasingly common. You are required to pay a "start-up" fee in exchange for worthless literature, if you get anything.
  • Re-shipping Scams – A foreign company posts an ad seeking someone to inspect electronics from home. These goods have been stolen using fake credit cards, and all evidence will point to you upon investigation.
